Wilson's bird-of-paradise

Watercolours, opaque white and watercolour pencils, A4.
Inspired by several photos and painted in front of the computer (about 2 1/2 hours). It was a little exhausting, but fun to paint like this. It forced me to work quickly and made me feel like getting closer to the true nature of watercolours (or, at least, closer to the style I intend to use in the future)…

When I saw photos of the Wilson's Bird-of-paradise (Cicinnurus respublica) for the first time, I thought it looked like an alien! The male is so colourful, it’s unbelievable (even the mouth is green on the inside!).
This passerine bird is up to 21cm long and lives in rainforests of West Papua. Due to ongoing habitat loss and exploitation, it’s listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.

Aquarell, Deckweiß und Aquarellbuntstifte, A4.
Von mehreren Fotos inspiriert und vor dem PC gemalt (in etwa 2 1/2 Stunden). Es war etwas anstrengend, so zu malen, aber es hat auch Spaß gemacht. Ich wurde dadurch zum schnellen Arbeiten gezwungen und es fühlte sich an, als käme ich dem wahren Wesen der Aquarellfarben (oder zumindest dem Stil, den ich erreichen möchte) etwas näher…

Als ich zum ersten Mal Fotos vom Blauköpfigen Paradiesvogel (Cicinnurus respublica) sah, fand ich, er sähe fast wie ein Alien aus! Das Männchen ist unglaublich bunt (sogar der Mund ist innen grün!).
Dieser Sperlingsvogel wird bis zu 21cm lang und lebt in den Regenwäldern von West Papua. Wegen anhaltendem Lebensraumverlust wird er von der IUCN als „gering gefährdet“ eingestuft.
