Unlike many humans, most animals seem to always know where their limits are...
The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) lives in many parts of the world, although in Europe, you can find it almost exclusively in the North and East. After the insecticide DDT had been banned in the 1970s, their numbers have increased a lot and are still growing in many regions.
Seen from below, the osprey’s wings are noticeably long and narrow and its anatomy shows various characteristics that identify it as a bird of prey that specialized on fish. It only preys on mammals, birds and other smaller animals on rare occasions.
Unlike my friend
from England who takes part in a monitoring project I envy her a lot for, I’ve never had the honour of being able to watch an osprey in real life, so I used various photos to get inspired for this painting.
Because of their plumage that’s full of contrast, the big yellow eyes and the spectacular fishing, during which they sometimes dive down completely; ospreys certainly belong to my most favourite native birds of Germany!

Der Fischadler (Pandion haliaetus) ist fast weltweit verbreitet, doch in Europa findet man ihn nach intensiver menschlicher Verfolgung fast nur noch im Norden und Osten. Nach dem Verbot des Insektizids DDT in den 1970er Jahren haben sich die Bestände deutlich erholt und wachsen in vielen Regionen noch immer.
Der Fischadler wirkt im Flug auffällig lang- und schmalflügelig und zeigt verschiedene Merkmale, die ihn als einen auf Fisch spezialisierten Raubvogel auszeichnen. Nur selten erbeutet er Säugetiere, Vögel u.a. kleinere Tiere.
Da ich – anders als eine Freundin aus England, die beneidenswerterweise an einem Monitoring-Projekt teilnimmt – leider noch nie die Ehre hatte, einen Fischadler mit eigenen Augen zu sehen, habe ich mich von verschiedenen Fotos zu diesem Bild inspirieren lassen.
Wegen ihrem kontrastreichen Gefieder, den großen gelben Augen und den spektakulären Fischfängen, bei denen sie manchmal komplett untertauchen, gehören Fischadler eindeutig zu meinen Favoriten unter den einheimischen Vögeln!
