Living Forest by rieke-b Living Forest by rieke-b
(edited description)

Watercolours, watercolour pencils and opaque white, A4. Finished after two days.
Painted as a birthday gift for my mother. I’ve wanted to paint red deers for a long time. Seeing them in autumn must be a heavenly experience…

Even though they aren’t critically endangered, red deers don’t have an easy life here in Germany. Their natural habitats are open landscapes or forest edges, but human settlements forced them to live in the forests. People exterminated all the big predators and now the deers, who reproduce without natural control, are considered as pests who damage the forests and are being hunted. :(
Strangely enough, the red deer is Germany’s only big wild animal who survived the Middle Ages because the noblemen and rich people were passionate hunters and didn’t want the red deer to go extinct. Other people weren’t allowed to hunt it.

Many big animals are critically endangered all over the world. Nobody gains anything when an animal goes extinct. I don’t say that hunters were “bad people” and many poachers are very poor and hardly have a choice, but I can’t stand the arrogance of many hunters who fight the re-introduction of big predators and claim to have the sole right to kill deers.
If big predators were allowed to return, many hunters wouldn’t have so much to do anymore, but nature would get back a lot of balance. Eagles and other rare scavengers could eat without getting poisoned by lead ammunition.
If livestock breeders and cattle farmers got financial support to buy big dogs to protect the herds and received compensation for lost animals, they might learn to live close to wolves, bears and other predators (who are being misunderstood far too often).

I’m very glad that the wolf and lynx have returned to Germany successfully, even though their numbers are still small. :) The bear will have more problems to be accepted, but there’s hope…

There are still many red deers here in Germany, but most of them aren't free anymore. They have to stay in certain areas and get shot if they leave them. :(

You're welcome. ^u^

Ooouhh......that's good if they're still exist in your place.:)
Ouw....I'm feel bad if they're not free anymore since the poaching was rampant. :/
Actually, I really love the red deers, they're so cute! <3
But..hee...they're not exist in my place since the climate is not compatible with them all...~_~

They actually don't live near my hometown, there's not enough space for them here. I've never seen a free red deer with my own eyes, but we have many smaller roe deers nearby.
It's the old German hunting laws which make the life of deers very difficult and also give big predators a very hard time. :(

I hate that they've legalised wolf hunting in Sweden... Yes, it sucks for farmers that lose livestock, and when they go into villages children might be in danger - but then take care of them when they are a problem! Not by killing them off before they do anything.

Humans have lived away from nature so long we're terrified of it and desperate to bend it to suit ourselves. Horrible creatures we are. (And honestly, I wouldn't wanna meet a wild wolf. Doesn't mean they don't have the right to exist!)

People and big predators - that's been a difficult topic ever since, but hunting wolves really shouldn't be necessary since they're already so rare in Europe. :(

I'm reading an interesting book about all this at the moment: In many countries, people do live close to wolves and bears without problems. It's their attitude towards nature and their dogs help them to scare away the predators. Wolves also usually don't go near villages when there's enough prey in the wild.

There are solutions, but it's difficult to make them become real in any densely populated European country... I don't want to give up hope, though, because there are so many wonderful people all over the world working and donating for conservation.
Many people would also welcome big animals, but there are laws that work against the will of the majority. :(

(Don't worry, if you should ever have the luck to see a wild wolf, it will surely be gone within a few seconds. They really don't want to meet people and don't attack when they aren't cornered. ;) )

The problem seems to be that since the wolves are forced to the middle/south part (the northern "Sami" have always been allowed to hunt wolves since they keep reindeer) they are getting too close to other packs, making their territories smaller. Adding to this that we hunt moose and deer, their prey is limited.

This all adds up to the wolves taking greater risks getting close to humans and going into villages. Last winter we found wolf tracks by my dads house, and many people in villages nearby had taken pictures and reported to newspapers of wolves walking on the streets in the village (not by farms, but rather large villages, yet not towns).

I do understand people are scared of wolves, but I find it ridiculous the solution is to hunt them, rather than fix what's driving them closer to people - namely the hunting in the north.

They also complain about the Swedish wolves being inbred. I do believe the best way to fix that is by adding fresh blood, not limiting the population further. (They have imported wolves, but if put in the wild they'll just walk back to their homeland.)

That's truly some worrying information. :( If wolves are being hunted, they'll surely have to move away, but if they can't it will become problematic. These problems are completely human-made, though.
If the wolves were allowed to stay in an area that's big enough for them, in a healthy environment with enough prey, most of the "wolf problems" you have now would vanish.

I hope there are some committed conservationists in your country who fight for the wolves' survival?

It is indeed many people who oppose it. I'm just living in the most "wolf-crowded" region of the country, so around here most people just think it's good they're hunted. So far I think there is really strict regulation about how many wolves can be killed in each region, so as long as that doesn't change it will probably be okay.

If not, these beautiful creatures will probably become extinct in Sweden again. They were hunted to extinction until the 1960s, and I think came back (from Russia or Finland) in the 80s. That's why the Swedish wolves are so inbred. (Between 1990 and 2007 no new blood was introduced) - just made some research haha. ^^
